Before I became a foster carer, I worked with unaccompanied asylum seekers, their foster carers and social workers. I also had friends who were fostering so I had some knowledge about it.
My biggest worry was if I would be able to cope with the challenges of fostering. In the beginning it was not easy because of my lack of experience and the unpredictable nature of fostering a teenager.
The most rewarding part about fostering is seeing an unruly teenager going through some tough times, reunited with his/her biological mum/dad or relative.
The child I am fostering currently has been with me for over four years. I have witnessed the transition from a little boy to a mature and confident young man.
If you have a spare bedroom, a good level of availability then there shouldn’t be anything holding you back.
