Being a male foster carer

Being a Male Foster Carer: Challenging Stereotypes and Making a Difference

Hello, my name is Asrat, and I'm a male foster carer. When I first became a carer, I told my youngest brother about it, and he was surprised. He always thought fostering was predominantly for older women or retired couples but never envisioned younger, single men being involved.

There's a common misconception that women are better suited for handling the challenges of fostering and are inherently more caring than men. However, I firmly believe that men are equally capable of managing these challenges and can be just as nurturing.

Since becoming a foster carer in 2013, I have faced my share of challenges but have also provided excellent care for the young person in my life.

Facing the Rewards and Challenges of Fostering

Before becoming a foster carer, I used to work at my local council. I became involved with the council's fostering office, where I worked with unaccompanied asylum seekers from around the globe. This experience introduced me to fostering and allowed me to work alongside social workers. I found immense satisfaction in helping others.

Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience, particularly when I see the positive differences I've made in a child's life. It can also be challenging when a child refuses to engage or accept help for various reasons. However, fostering is a noble profession that involves shaping a child's life and helping them become productive, successful citizens.

Throughout my journey as a male foster carer, I have received invaluable support from Greater London Fostering (GLF). I have had access to relevant training, and my supervising social worker is just a phone call away for any questions or concerns I might have.

Fostering since 2013 has taught me valuable lessons in patience and understanding. If there are any men out there considering fostering, I strongly encourage you to seriously explore this opportunity. You won't be disappointed.
